Thunks

A number of 'lateral thinking' riddles this week. You don't need to solve them all - just post answers for the ones you think you can figure out.

1) When you see geese flying in a V formation, why is it that one leg of the V is longer than the other?
2) Why are there so many Smiths in the telephone directory?
3) What is E.T. short for?
4) Where do you find a no-legged dog?
5) Approximately how many house bricks does it take to complete a brick house in England?
6) How do you stop a bull from charging?

8.) Take away my first letter; I remain the same. Now take away my fourth letter; I remain the same. Now take away my last letter; I remain the same. What am I?
9) If a white man threw a black stone into the Red Sea, what would it become?
10) How do you make a bandstand?

OK, so I'm all out of ideas for Thunks (suggestions on a postcard please). I'll still keep posting more of them as and when they occur to me, but to keep your brain muscles exercised in the meantime I have devised (well, borrowed) a series of puzzles and riddles.

Some are harder than others so feel free to post ideas and suggestions even if you can't spot the final answer.

So an easy one to start us off:

Three boxes are all labeled incorrectly, and you must get the labels right. The labels on the boxes read as follows:

[box 1] nails
[box 2] screws
[box 3] nails and screws

To gain the information you need to move the labels to the correct boxes, you may remove a single item from one of the boxes. You may not look into the boxes, nor pick them up and shake them, etc.

Can this be done? If so, how? If not, why not?

Stairs. Do they go up or do they go down?

An obvious question perhaps? Which really did come first - the chicken or the egg?

I've been holding off posting these as I've been busy with a new school website but it's about time I posted another.

It's about time we got back into the swing of it with these Thunk things as I've fallen out of the habit of posting them.

If being brave is a good thing, does that mean that daring criminals are at least partly good?

It's been an atrociously long time since the last Thunk was posted - due in part to a failed hard drive which had my list of Thunks on it(!)

Anyway, back into it...

If a bathroom has no bath in it but has a shower instead is it still a bathroom?
